From 2005 to 2024, he became the most-capped player and the all-time top goalscorer for the Indian national team. 

Chhetri’s leadership 

His leadership led India to multiple victories in the: Nehru Cup SAFF Championship 2008 AFC Challenge Cup which qualified India for their first AFC Asian Cup in 27 years.

Chhetri’s decision to retire was to provide opportunities to young strikers who are ready to shine in Indian football. 

Chhetri’s longevity, work ethic, and success in international football will continue to inspire aspiring young footballers across the nation and globally.
